What is the section labeled “Pantry Ingredients” in my Tasty Grocery Bag?
Pantry Ingredients are pantry staples like salt and pepper – items we think you might already have at home. These items will be listed in your Tasty Grocery Bag in the app if they’re needed for a recipe, but are automatically not added to your order. If you’d like to purchase them, simply tap the blue “+” button for that item, and that item will be added to your Tasty Grocery Bag.
What if I want to select a different brand for a product in the Tasty Grocery Bag?
Tap the “Swap” button under any item in your Tasty Grocery Bag in the app. From there, you’ll be able to switch to a different brand of the same product. For example, if a recipe calls for rice, and you want a different brand of rice, you can make that substitution directly in the Tasty Grocery bag. However, if a recipe calls for rice, and you want to use potatoes instead, you won’t be able to make that substitution within the Tasty Grocery Bag. Once you tap the “Check out with Walmart” button, you’ll be taken to Walmart where you’ll be able to search for and add potatoes to your order.
Why do you need my location?
We ask for your location in order to give you the most up-to-date estimated pricing and availability information for the products we show in your Tasty Grocery Bag in the app.

Preparation
Cut the head of cabbage in half lengthwise and slice off the ends. Quarter lengthwise, then slice crosswise into 2-inch (5 cm) pieces.
Place the cabbage and salt in a large bowl. Using your hands, massage the salt into the cabbage until it starts to soften a bit. Cover with a kitchen towel and let stand for 1-2 hours. Rinse the cabbage thoroughly under cold water, then let drain in a colander.
Meanwhile, chop the green onions into 1-inch (2 cm) pieces.

Peel the ginger and garlic.
Cut the daikon radish into matchsticks.
Combine the rice, water, garlic, ginger, and soy sauce in a mason jar or medium bowl. Use an immersion blender or standing blender to make a smooth paste. Mix in the sugar and gochugaru, starting with 1 tablespoon for a mild flavor and up to 5 tablespoons to make it spicier.

Gently squeeze any remaining water from the cabbage and transfer to a large bowl, along with the green onions and daikon. Toss to combine.
Add the seasoning paste to the bowl. Wearing gloves if you’d like to protect your hands from stings, stains, and smells, gently massage the paste into the vegetables until they are thoroughly coated.
Pack the kimchi into a large jar, pressing down until the seasoning paste rises to cover the vegetables and leaving at least 1 inch (2 ½ cm) of space at the top. Seal the jar with the lid.
Eat the kimchi right away or, to ferment, let the jar stand in a dark place at room temperature for 2-14 days. You may see bubbles inside and liquid may seep out of the jar; to be safe, place a bowl or plate under the jar to catch any overflow. Check the kimchi once a day. When it reaches your desired flavor, transfer the jar to the refrigerator. Eat right away, or let sit for another week or 2 for the flavors to deepen.
I’m 100% Korean that grew up in the Korean culture. While watching this video made me cringe a bit how Tasty made kimchi. Making kimchi is not a good idea for beginners. It takes so much energy and patience to make this. Making kimchi is very time consuming and takes up a lot of space in your house. Make sure you have a lot of containers before making this!

Guys, this IS vegan kimchi. Did y’all miss that? It’s not meant to be traditional. Furthermore, the video in and of itself is sped up to show the steps, but it’s still a rather long process. I’ve made vegan kimchi before, and I like how the person who made this recipe found a new and innovative way of making it. Stop being snobs.

I am from South Korea and I’m vegan so this is a great substitute for the classic Korean kimchi

Kimchi can be quite an active ferment so ensure you “burp” your jar quite frequently to avoid any unfortunate explosions. Alternatively, there are water valves or water-less valves on the market to let out the gas for you if you’re quite a regular fermenter.

The longer you keep your kimchi in jars, the more flavor you’ll get

I subbed gochugaru for a combo of red pepper flakes, cayenne, and paprika. I don’t know what gochugaru tastes like on its own, but the internet told me it’s less spicy than cayenne with a bit of sweet smokiness. It turned out SO GOOD.
