Korean-Inspired Hot Ham

Ingredients

for 4 servings

For the Rice:

  • 2 cups short grain rice (400 g)
  • water, per package instructions

For the Ham:

  • 1 tablespoon high heat oil
  • 1 small ham steak, cut into 1 in (2.54 cm)
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 bunch green onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup soy sauce (60 mL)
  • ¼ cup Korean red pepper flakes (30 g)
  • ¼ cup white granulated sugar (50 g)

Preparation

  1. Cook rice according to package directions.
  2. Add oil to a large skillet. Then, add cubed ham, salt and pepper to taste, and cook until ham is heated through.
  3. Make a well in the center of the skillet. Add sesame oil as well as the green onions. Cook until fragrant - approximately 2 minutes.
  4. To the green onions, add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  5. Add the soy sauce, red pepper flakes, and sugar to a separate bowl. Mix to create a thick paste. Add more sugar or pepper flakes to make it more sweet or spicy.
  6. Add the paste to the pan and stir to mix. Add splashes of water as needed to incorporate.
  7. Serve the ham over rice and top with green onion.
