Korean-Inspired Hot Ham

Ingredients
for 4 servings
For the Rice:
- 2 cups short grain rice (400 g)
- water, per package instructions
For the Ham:
- 1 tablespoon high heat oil
- 1 small ham steak, cut into 1 in (2.54 cm)
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 1 bunch green onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- ¼ cup soy sauce (60 mL)
- ¼ cup Korean red pepper flakes (30 g)
- ¼ cup white granulated sugar (50 g)
Preparation
- Cook rice according to package directions.
- Add oil to a large skillet. Then, add cubed ham, salt and pepper to taste, and cook until ham is heated through.
- Make a well in the center of the skillet. Add sesame oil as well as the green onions. Cook until fragrant - approximately 2 minutes.
- To the green onions, add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
- Add the soy sauce, red pepper flakes, and sugar to a separate bowl. Mix to create a thick paste. Add more sugar or pepper flakes to make it more sweet or spicy.
- Add the paste to the pan and stir to mix. Add splashes of water as needed to incorporate.
- Serve the ham over rice and top with green onion.
